Doulé Doula Care
Guiding you gently through every step.
What is a Birth Doula?
A birth doula, different than a postpartum doula, is a birth worker responsible for supporting the birthing mother emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Unlike a midwife, doctor, or birth assistant, a birth doula does not practice anything medical. Additionally, a birth doula is different from a postpartum doula in that the birth doula will meet with a client prenatally, attend the birth, and meet one to three times with the client postpartum; postpartum doulas have a much more in-depth role in the postpartum period than that of birth doulas.
Doulé (δούλη)
You may be wondering: what does 'doulé' mean? Simply put, it is the Greek word from which we derive the modern term 'doula'. In its original form, it meant "female slave" or "bondsmaid". I chose to name my LLC this because I believe it embodies the true meaning of what it is to be a doula.
My Birth Philosophy
A fundamental part of being a birth worker is having what is called a 'birth philosophy'. Mine is as follows: While commonplace, birth is a miracle. As women, we are made to birth; it is a unique gift given to us from God. My goal as a doula is to honor that gift and approach it in a way that recognizes the significance of it. To do this, I aim to provide mothers with the support and encouragement they need to have an optimal birth. Whether it is giving words of encouragement to the mother during labor, empowering the father with knowledge during prenatal sessions, or helping the family adjust to the new baby during the postpartum period, my intent is to serve.
For my birth philosophy, I rely heavily on 1 Peter 4:10 which reads, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms" (NIV). I truly believe it is my calling to be operating in the birth world, and I am honored to be doing so.
